*** Le quotidien britannique affiche en couverture une liste de 50 raisons d'aimer l'Europe' et détaille dans un éditorial les raisons de célébrer le 50e anniversaire du Traité de Rome. "C'est une coïncidence heureuse que cet anniversaire tombe au milieu de la présidence allemande [de l'UE]. Quelle preuve plus évidente pourrait-il y avoir de la réussite de l'UE que la tenue de festivités sous la porte de Brandebourg durant toute la nuit ? Le symbole de la division de l'Europe de l'après-guerre est maintenant devenu un symbole de son unité. (...) Durant ces 50 ans, l'UE a fait plus preuve de cohésion que de division, parfois à sa propre surprise. Et elle est devenue un modèle d'association internationale admiré à travers le monde.
Vu de l'intérieur, elle peut sembler manquer d'efficacité, de démocratie et d'une raison d'être commune. Mais notre introspection critique nous cache trop souvent ses mérites. Le meilleur témoignage en faveur de l'UE cinquantenaire est la file d'attente de pays qui voudraient la rejoindre."
