"Fear not values. Public opinion and the populist vote in Europe."
"Protest voters and populist politicians are shaking up the long-established political majorities in Europe and the USA. But what prompts voters to back parties who claim that they alone represent the interests of the people and are challenging the so-called establishment? Our latest eupinions survey, attempts to uncover the reasons behind this development by putting the most salient explanations to the test: values and fear.
“Our findings show that fear of globalisation is the decisive factor behind demands for changes away from the political mainstream. Values play a minor role.” write the authors Catherine de Vries and Isabell Hoffmann. “Our data shows that right wing populist parties in Europe heavily attract people in fear of globalisation.” "
