On 10 and 11 September, Finland, the current holder of the EU Presidency, will host the ASEM Summit, bringing together European and Asian Heads of State or Government in Helsinki. The parties involved in ASEM cooperation process are: the Member States of the European Union, the European Commission, the 10 ASEAN countries (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), China, Japan and Republic of Korea.The Summit in Helsinki will mark the tenth anniversary of the cooperation process. It will be chaired by the Prime Minister of Finland, Matti Vanhanen. The ASEM 6 Summit will be the largest ever meeting of Heads of State or Government hosted by Finland, bringing together some two thousand participants. It is also estimated that around a thousand media representatives will come to Finland to cover the summit.The summit will focus on ways to respond to the challenges of globalisation. The issues on the agenda include global security threats, energy security, climate change, WTO negotiations, ways to strengthen cultural dialogue, competitiveness and the structural changes in global economy. The meeting will also consider the future prospects for ASEM cooperation on the basis of a joint research project by Finland and Japan, entitled "ASEM in its tenth year: Looking back, looking forward", published in March 2006.A number of other events will be organised in connection with the ASEM Summit. On 3-6 September, NGOs will hold the sixth Asia-Europe People's Forum, which is expected to attract about 400 participants from Asia and Europe. Representatives of Asian and European labour market organisations will meet on 7 and 8 September and business leaders on 10 and 11 September. On 7 and 8 September, a meeting of the ASEM partners will be held in connection with ASEM's 10th anniversary. The main theme of the meeting will be cooperation between civil society, business and government. On 9 September, there will also be an Editors' Roundtable, a discussion forum for media representatives from prominent European and Asian media organisations and, on 8 September, an open discussion will be held on cooperation between Asia and Europe.ASEM cooperation was initiated in 1996 with a view to strengthening dialogue and interaction between Asia and Europe. Discussions centre on political, economic, cultural and social issues. The summits that are organised every two years, alternately in Asia and Europe, set the guidelines for cooperation. They also provide Asian and European Heads of State or Government with an opportunity to meet each other and discuss key international issues. La Présidence finlandaise organisera, les 10 et 11 septembre, le 6e Sommet Asie-Europe qui se déroulera au Centre des expositions d'Helsinki. La coopération Asem regroupe les États membres de l'UE, dix membres de l'Association des nations d'Asie du Sud-Est (ASEAN), ainsi que la Chine, le Japon, la République de Corée et la Commission européenne.Ce sommet, qui sera marqué par la célébration du 10e anniversaire de la coopération Asem, sera présidé par le Premier ministre finlandais Matti Vanhanen. Deux milliers de personnes participeront à ce sommet pour lequel sont attendus un millier de représentants des médias. Il s'agit de la plus grande rencontre jamais organisée en Finlande au niveau des chefs d'État et de gouvernement.Le thème central de ce sommet portera sur la réponse à apporter aux défis de la mondialisation. Seront notamment abordés les menaces pesant sur la sécurité globale ainsi que la sécurité énergétique, le changement climatique, les négociations OMC, le renforcement du dialogue culturel de même que les questions de compétitivité et la restructuration de l'économie mondiale. Seront également examinées les perspectives de la coopération Asem à la lumière d'une étude finlando-japonaise dont les résultats ont été rendus publics en mars 2006.En marge de ce sommet, plusieurs autres événements auront également lieu au Centre des expositions d'Helsinki. Les organisations non gouvernementales organiseront, du 3 au 6 septembre, le 6e Forum populaire Asie-Europe auquel sont attendus quelque 400 représentants d'Asie et d'Europe. Les représentants des mouvements syndicaux d'Asie et d'Europe se rencontreront les 7 et 8 septembre et les chefs d'entreprises les 10 et 11 septembre. Pour marquer le 10e anniversaire de cette coopération, les partenaires de l'Asem ont été conviés les 7 et 8 septembre à une rencontre où ils examineront la coopération entre société civile, entreprises et administration. Seront en outre organisés, le 9 septembre, une table ronde qui réunira les représentants des principaux médias européens et asiatiques, et, le 8 septembre, un forum de discussion ouvert à tous et consacré à la coopération entre l'Asie et l'Europe.La coopération Asem a été instituée en 1996 dans un effort de renforcer le dialogue et l'interaction entre l'Asie et l'Europe. Les débats portent sur les questions politiques, économiques, culturelles et sociales. Les sommets organisés tous les deux ans à tour de rôle en Europe et en Asie fixent les orientations de la coopération. Ces sommets permettent aux chefs d'État et de gouvernement européens et asiatiques de se rencontrer et d'aborder les questions d'actualité.
