Jean-Claude Juncker is one of the most experienced leaders in Europe. For almost 20 years he served as Prime Minister of Luxembourg (1995 until 2013). From 2005 until 2013, he was also President of the Eurogroup – the Ministers of Finance from the Eurozone – and was instrumental in leading Europe safely out of the financial crisis.
Juncker was born in 1954. He joined the Christian Social People’s Party in Luxembourg in 1974 and went on to study law at the University of Strasbourg. He was first appointed as Deputy Minister of Labour at the age of 28. In 1982 he was appointed as Minister of Labour and in 1984 as Minister of Finance, a position that allowed him to chair the meetings of ministers of finances of the then European Economic Community. In 1992 he played a key role in the run-up to the signing of the Maastricht Treaty which created the European Union.
During Luxembourg’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 1997, Prime Minister Juncker sought to tackle unemployment across the European Union. When Luxembourg again held the rotating Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2005, he forged the reform of the Stability and Growth Pact. He also succeeded in revitalising the Lisbon Strategy with a focus on its social and environmental dimensions.
Jean-Claude Juncker has been recognised with numerous awards for his contributions to Europe, including the prestigious Charlemagne Prize in 2006.
On 7 March 2014, Jean-Claude Juncker was elected as the candidate of the European People’s Party (EPP) for the Presidency of the European Commission at the EPP Congress, which was held in Dublin, Ireland. There he announced his three key values: experienced and efficient leadership, solidarity amongst people and nations and a strong vision for the future.
He has now embarked on the first ever Europe-wide campaign for the 22-25 May 2014 European elections on behalf of the EPP.
